Position Title: Cemetery Grounds Maintenance Worker I

Department: Cemetery

Reports to: Cemetery Caretaker

Category: Non-Exempt

Pay Grade: 9 ($12.77 to $18.67)

Position Summary:

Under direct supervision, performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor in the construction and maintenance of City cemeteries. Additional duties may include maintenance of parks, lake, golf course, pool, buildings and other municipal facilities.

Tasks:

  • Supervision of D.O.C. personnel mowing and trimming City cemeteries.
  • Fix water leaks and install new water lines.
  • Provides janitorial services for maintenance building, mausoleum and grounds.
  • Operates trucks, backhoes, loaders, jackhammers, mowers, trimmers, tractors, chippers, utility carts and other equipment essential to grounds maintenance.
  • Loads and hauls equipment, sand, gravel, clay, top soil and other construction and maintenance materials.
  • Show lots for sell; works with funeral directors and monuments companies concerning policies and operations of the cemetery.
  • Follows City policy and safe work practices
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, superiors, other agencies, and the public.
  • Deals with the public in a manner that positively promotes the image of the City and handles complaints tactfully.
  • All employees of the City of Winfield are subject to immediate callout when an emergency, disaster or breach of homeland security occurs. Such call to respond and assist may involve those activities to his/her regular job responsibilities and incorporate other non-job-related duties as necessary and required of an employee. An employee’s response to these matters may require the working of unusual, long hours over an extended period with infrequent breaks or rest periods.

Experience and Education:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school and two years of experience in construction and maintenance work plus a valid commercial driver's license. 
  • Must have or obtain supervisory certification for Department of Corrections personnel within 6 months of employment and requires maintaining supervisory status.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Capacity to perform manual labor in the maintenance, repair, and minor construction of city cemetery facilities, roads and building maintenance. 
  • Ability to perform heavy physical work and ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, crawl, push, pull and perform similar body movements.
  • Possesses hand/eye/foot coordination adequate to make repairs and to operate equipment.
  • Ability to talk and hear in person, by telephone and two-way radio.
  • Ability to see and read instructions.
