Job Description:

Job Objectives:

Performs all duties associated with maintenance, care and development of indoor and outdoor plant displays, collections, and exhibits.

 

Essential Job Functions:

Maintain

  • Demonstrates and maintains knowledge of equipment and maintaining of landscape.
  • Effectively and timely communicates to supervisors all botanical related items.
  • Maintains all assigned horticulture or botanical functions.

Install

  • Through consultation with supervisors and other resources develops and maintains a skillset of installation for all botanical, landscape and hardscape products.
  • Develop the ability to read and execute landscape projects from construction documents or landscape designs.

Plant Care

  • Performs a wide range of landscape/maintenance tasks important to cultivation, preservation, protection, and transplanting of existing and new plants; including but not limited to soil preparation, planting, mulching, and weeding, watering, fertilizing, irrigating, IPM and pesticide application.
  • Participate in care of turf areas, woody plants, and herbaceous ornamental plants; including but not limited to mowing, edging, trimming, pruning, pinching, repotting, watering, fertilizing, and pest control.
  • Observes health of botanical collection and reports issues or concerns immediately.
  • Performs greenhouse management tasks as required

Job Standards:

Minimum Qualifications

Educational Requirements:  High School Diploma or equivalent

Years of Experience:  Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities

License, certifications, etc…  Valid State of Kansas Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications

Educational Requirements:   Acquiring a degree from an accredited college or university in Horticulture, Botany, or related field

Years of Experience:  1 year practical work experience in Horticulture related field

License, certifications, etc…   Kansas Pesticide Applicator License

 

Physical Requirements of Position:

  • Climbing. Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.
  • Stooping. Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Kneeling. Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Crouching. Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Pushing. Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
  • Reaching. Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Lifting. Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Fingering. Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Grasping. Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • The worker is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operates machines, such as lathes, drill presses, power saws, and mills where seeing the job is at or within arm's reach; performs mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature, such as carpenters, technicians, service people, plumbers, painters, mechanics, etc.

 

Equipment:

Mowers, edgers, rakes, weed eater, pitchfork, shovel, lopper, pruning shears, hoses, and tiller

 

Work Environment:

Usual working days/hours:  19.75 hours per week

Location of work:  Zoo Grounds
