Job Title: Water Operator I
Under the direction of the Chief Water Operator, and occasional supervision of the City Public Works Director, the Water Operator I is a non-exempt position under FLSA. This employee is responsible for all duties related to the Distribution & Collection Systems. This employee should possess mechanical and communication skills.
- Assists in operation and maintenance of water & distribution system;
- Maintains tools & departmental equipment;
- Assists in taking water samples & testing for water quality.
- Assists other departments as the need arises;
- Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.
WATER OPERATOR I - (Salary Range: $10.50 to $15.20 / hour)
EXPERIENCE: One year of similar or related experience is desired. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably within six months of employment.
EDUCATION: A high school diploma or GED is required. Technical education or degree in related field is preferred. Certification as a Class I Water Operator from KDHE is required within one year of employment. A valid Kansas commercial driver’s license is required within eighteen months of employment.
TECHNICAL SKILLS: A working knowledge of water quality testing techniques, equipment maintenance, mechanics, and mathematics is desired. This employee must be able to learn how to operate departmental equipment. The ability to read and interpret manuals and written instructions is required. This employee should possess communication and mechanical skills.
PROBLEM SOLVING: Some minor problem solving is a factor in this position. This employee encounters problems with equipment malfunctions and maintenance of distribution and collections systems.
DECISION MAKING: Some minor decision making is a factor in this position. This employee follows instructions on equipment repairs and how to perform duties in the safest and most efficient manner.
SUPERVISION: This employee works under the direction of the Chief Water Operator and occasional supervision of the City Public Works Director.
FINANCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY: This employee is responsible for safe operation of departmental equipment. This employee does not participate in the annual budget process and has limited authority to purchase necessary supplies.
PERSONNEL RELATIONS: Daily contact with the general public, co-workers and direct contact with supervisory personnel is expected.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Some adverse working conditions exist within this position. Exposure to hazardous chemicals, heavy machinery, excessive noise, heights, and work in confined spaces is expected. Occasional nights/weekend hours may be required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects, and the ability to operate heavy machinery is required daily in this position.
