Position Title:     Sign Technician

Department:        Public Works

Position Summary:

This job includes the performance of any duties involved in working with the Franklin County street signs, legally required signs as designated by the Franklin County Commission, and the placement of such signs throughout the County.  This employee performs inventory checks to ensure adequate stock of sign blanks and sheeting is on hand.  Work is done under general supervision of Road Supervisor and Public Works Director.

Base Rate:         $13.68 per hour depending on qualifications

Hours:       Generally 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.  Some overtime may be required.

Additional Information:     

High School Diploma or GED required. Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of hire; obtain and maintain valid Kansas driver’s license within six (6) months of hire; and ability to obtain Class B Commercial Driver’s License within six months of hire.  Associate's degree or equivalent from two year-college or technical school required.

Maintains inventory of all signs owned by the County, including those placed throughout the County as well as those in the shop.

Sets up and/or removes barricades, traffic cones, or similar objects to secure the safety of the public by setting out portable signs due to accidents or conditions that may have damaged signs.

Works in a variety of weather conditions.

Franklin County conducts background checks and drug screenings on all potential candidates.

JOB SUMMARY:

This job includes the performance of any duties involved in working with the Franklin County street signs, legally required signs as designated by the Franklin County Commission, and the placement of such signs throughout the County.  This employee performs inventory checks to ensure adequate stock of sign blanks and sheeting is on hand.  Work is done under general supervision of Road Supervisor and Public Works Director.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintains inventory of all signs owned by the County, including those placed throughout the County as well as those in the shop;
  • Maintains tube/culvert inventory;
  • Operates a motor vehicle requiring a valid Kansas Driver's License to install and to maintain signs or to move supplies and materials;
  • Reviews work requests for signs with Road Superintendent to determine the need for specific sign requests;
  • Prepares work requests for signs that are stolen or damaged in the County;
  • Prepares Kansas One Call locate paperwork for signs, culverts, and ditching work that is to be completed in the County;
  • Calls locates to Kansas One Call, takes return calls from locators, and sets up any required meet on site requests;
  • Records all locates in database;
  • Sets up and maintains sign database showing exact location of all signs in the County;
  • Prepares list of signs needed by the County to be submitted for bid and purchase approval;
  • Completes miscellaneous work requests for shop area;
  • Orders and receives supplies for signs;
  • Records information on cut utilities;
  • Opens and closes roadways for County work and utilities contractors;
  • Communicates with schools, Post Offices, 911 and Sheriff's Department regarding road work and closures;
  • Performs additional duties that may be requested or required by the Road Superintendent or the Public Works Director;
  • Operates a variety of standard office equipment including a calculator, personal computer, and computer software to prepare cost estimates;
  • Sets up and/or removes barricades, traffic cones, or similar objects to secure the safety of the public by setting out portable signs due to accidents or conditions that may have damaged signs;
  • Works in a variety of weather conditions;
  • On an as-needed basis, performs the following:
    • installs and maintains signs in the field and may set up temporary traffic control devices to allow work to be completed on roadways;
    • Inspects signs maintained by the County for damage, vandalism, and graffiti;
    • Works in close proximity to moving traffic, audible backup alarms, and construction equipment;
  • Provides direction to employees assigned to assist in the Sign Shop;
  • Performs other related duties as required.

 

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

  • Monitors condition of assigned equipment to assure care, service, lubrication and repairs;
  • Services, maintains and makes mechanical adjustments and minor repairs on equipment such as checking and servicing fuel, oil and coolant levels, lubrication, tire pressure and changes, general appearance.

 

SUPERVISORY FUNCTIONS:

  • None.
