Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARY

Under supervision of the water/wastewater superintendent, supervises skilled and semi-skilled workers in a wide variety of construction, repair, and maintenance of the city water and wastewater systems and related facilities; assists in the maintenance and repair of city pool.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES   

  • Determine work priorities and schedules
  • Assign workers and equipment to various water and wastewater system drainage construction, maintenance, and repair projects
  • Assist in preparation of current and long-range system improvements
  • Inspect water supply system, facility and structures
  • Schedule needed maintenance and repair on equipment
  • Conduct visual inspections of working apparatus
  • Operate sewer cleaning and rodding equipment as needed

OTHER FUNCTIONS

  • Assist other departments as needed
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the water/wastewater superintendent

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Experience:    Minimum four years progressively responsible experience in water systems general construction, maintenance, and repair work.  Experience in a supervisory position.

Education:    High school graduate or GED.

License/Certification:    Valid Kansas Class B commercial driver’s license.  Minimum Class II Water and Small System Wastewater Systems Operator certification or ability to acquire within 6 months of employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:    Knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in construction and maintenance of water supply system.  Knowledge of routine maintenance required for trucks, equipment, and hand tools.  Ability to perform required tests of supply water.  Ability to operate a variety of equipment.  Ability to coordinate and supervise the work of others, and to effectively communicate instructions.

 

Problem Solving:    Assist in identifying and assessing problems and needs, and logically determine appropriate action needed.

 

Decision Making:    Assist in making decisions concerning all aspects of water/wastewater system.

 

Supervision:   Minimal supervision is provided in the completion of daily assignments.

 

Financial Accountability:   Complete and turn in on a timely basis purchase orders for department expenses.

 

Personal Relations:    Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.

 

Working Conditions:    This position requires the willingness and ability to work around raw sewage, chemicals and dusty environments, exposure to noise of plant machinery and other equipment; mechanical and electrical hazards of operating equipment; fumes and odors of sewage, chemicals, and gases; toxic substances such as chemicals, cleaners, solvents, and gases; all types of weather and temperature conditions. Work and/or walk for long periods of time on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain. Subject to 24-hour emergency callbacks and standby and requires working varying hours, overtime, weekends, and holidays. Work environment is informal, team-oriented, having both routine and variable tasks with variable pace and pressure. Work is performed in both indoors in plant area and outdoors in field and collateral facilities.

Physical Requirements:    Ability to lift up to 75 pounds occasionally.  Ability to stand, walk, bend, grasp, push, pull, and perform similar body movements.  Hand/eye/foot coordination adequate for operating and repairing vehicles and tools; ability to speak and hear in person, by two-way radio, and telephone.  Ability to see for reading technical materials, orders, and operating equipment and tools.
