Job Summary:

Sedgwick County Detention Deputies perform tasks associated with the 24-hour-a-day care and custody of inmates at the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility and Work Release Facility.

Job Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 18 years of age
  • US Citizen
  • No Felony convictions, DUI convictions, diversions, or expungements within 5 years OR Domestic Violence convictions or diversions after July 1, 1995.
  • May work 1st, 2nd or 3rd shift. 5-day work week not necessarily M-F.
  • Valid Kansas Driver's License required. Must meet Driver Qualification Standards as set forth in Sedgwick County's Fleet Vehicle Operation and Usage policy (R#225-1999).
  • Must pass FBI/KBI/LOCAL background check, polygraph, psychological testing, and pre-employment urine drug screen.


Major Job Responsibilities:

  • Reviews arresting officer's paperwork for completeness and accuracy before accepting incoming inmates; pat or strip searches inmates as necessary and required by guidelines to find contraband; inventories inmates clothing, personal property, and money; takes computerized fingerprints and take digital mug shot for verification by local, State and Federal agencies; utilizes force and/or self defense techniques to restrain disruptive or combative inmates; escorts inmates staying in custody to property where they are searched, showered, and dressed in issued clothing.
  • Secures all exterior and security doors in the facility by visually monitoring all movement of all people in the facility and controls movement utilizing screens and monitors in Master Control; controls all lights, alarms, elevators, and other override equipment; contacts outside agencies such as fire, EMS, etc. as needed.
  • Observes and controls inmate movement within the housing unit by communicating with inmates either in person or over the intercom system; conducts inmate searches for contraband; provides first aide and CPR when necessary.
  • Monitors inmates behavior and attitudes for signs of personality changes, depression, and developing conflicts between inmates; enforces the rules and guidelines for inmates which includes initiating disciplinary action when necessary; prepares and maintains records of inmates physical or mental problems; escorts clinic staff, delivers prescription and non-prescription medications in the absence of clinic personnel.
  • Prepares and maintains records of daily activities on the computer in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate log entries detailing the services and daily routines; creates and maintains files on inmates recording the time/dates/reason for incarceration, any changes in the conditions or requirements of incarceration and the time/date/authority for release.
  • Supervises movement in the facility; serves as first responder when there is a problem in a pod, fight, medical emergency, etc.; escorts inmates needing additional supervision or security; monitors radio traffic; supervises trustees in cleaning common areas and accounts for cleaning supplies used; conducts linen change in pod and assists Medical Deputy when necessary.
  • Verifies inventory of inmates clothing, personal property, and money against written records; utilizes departmental guidelines to determine property items an inmate may take into housing and to determine proper items to be returned to the inmate upon release.
  • Balances money at least three (3) times daily against written and computer generated balance.
  • Verifies inmates ability to leave facility by utilizing the computer and written records from the facility, local, State and Federal agencies and the courts; generates and completes release paperwork; sends copies to records and other agencies as required.
  • Maintains security of the clinic and the safety of the medical staff by monitoring all inmates coming into the clinic; conducts searches of the clinic and inmates attending the clinic for contraband.
  • Operates various technical equipment to monitor and control the activities of inmates and their visitors which includes controlling cameras, operating doors, elevators, showers and fire escapes.
  • Serves as rover patrolling halls and monitoring inmates movement; ensures inmates arrive at desired destinations as scheduled; assists Deputies assigned to a pod.
  • Supervises meal delivery, pick-up and tray return; removes trash from the facility; ensures inmates with special menus receive correct tray; notes inmates refusing meals.
  • Conducts inmate head counts; monitors activities of suicidal inmates, violent inmates; monitors inmates during visitation and recreation periods. Ensures all inmates are accounted for at all times; prevents inmate escapes, introduction and/or passing of contraband and prevents the assault or injury of inmates and staff; ensures that each inmate receives their meals, clothing changes, mail, opportunity for exercise, etc., as set forth in departmental policy.
  • Prepares written reports on incidents occurring inside the facility which include the actions/use of necessary force by the Deputies to be utilized in criminal prosecutions, defense against lawsuits, disciplinary procedures against inmates and for internal affairs investigations. Prepares reports regarding operational problems such as defective equipment, suggestions for improving services, or hazardous conditions.
  • Performs Work Release activities by maintaining control of inmates allowed work privileges; maintains records of work performance and polices the area of their living quarters; conducts various and sporadic shake downs and strip searches for the safety of the Deputies and other inmates.
  • Logs visitation hours of inmates and ensures the safety of visitors to include attorneys and other professional visits.
  • Answers inmates questions regarding the rules and regulations of the facility, provides information regarding the booking process, bond amounts and charges, etc.
  • Orders and delivers non-prescription medication ordered through the commissary; escorts clinic staff in the delivery of prescription medications. Performs other related work as required.

  • Knowledge of laws pertaining to the custody of prisoners.
  • Knowledge of the security of buildings and grounds, and of the rules and regulations governing entrances and exits.
  • Knowledge of health and safety practices.
  • Ability to evaluate and report behavior problems.
  • Ability to follow a prescribed routine with respect to all activities.
  • Ability to detect and report conditions which might indicate danger.
  • Ability to communicate with troubled inmates.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with inmates, other staff members and the public.
  • Ability to act quickly, and calmly in an emergency. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with associates and the general public.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain complete and accurate records and reports.
  • Ability to physically restrain uncooperative inmates. Ability to graduate from Sedgwick County Detention Academy or its equivalent.


Must Pass the Written Exam & Physical Agility Test:

WRITTEN EXAM:  After you apply, please email Julie Schmidt at julie.schmidt@sedgwick.gov to schedule your written test.  In the email, please include your full name and that you are testing for the Detention Deputy position.  Test scores are good for 3 years so if you have tested in the past, email Julie Schmidt at julie.schmidt@sedgwick.gov to let her know so she can apply your previous test score to your new application.  You may only test ONCE a year.  The Written Test is composed of 90 questions in multiple-choice format.  The questions relate to scenerios, basic math, and general knowledge and is nothing that can be studied for

If you pass the Written Test, you will be required to schedule an appointment with the Sheriff's Office to complete the PHYSICAL ABILITY TEST.  Information on this test is listed below:

INTRODUCTION: The Physical Ability Test is designed to evaluate the physical fitness, strength, and agility needed to perform the job of an entry level Commissioned or Detention Deputy. The test will consist of four sub-tests. All sub-tests are scored on a point system.  In order to pass, you must complete each sub-test and obtain a minimum cumulative score of 12 (Detention Deputy) or 21 (Sheriff Deputy) total points at the end of the 4 sub-tests while making sure you have followed all instructions within the specified time standard. If after two attempts you have not passed the Physical Ability Testing portion of the applicant process, you will be encouraged to practice.  These tests may be practiced at home by doing as many sit-ups and push-ups as you can in 1 minute and by running to improve fitness.

CLOTHING FOR THE TEST: In order to ensure you are able to do your best, it is recommended that you wear tennis shoes with excellent traction (NO sandals or thongs) and athletic style clothing (sweats, leggings, or shorts).

QUALIFYING SCORE:  In order to receive a qualifying score on the Physical Ability Test, you must complete the tests in the prescribed manner within the time allowed. Failure to complete any test as prescribed will result in a disqualifying score on that test.

CRITICAL RESPONSE:  There are a total of 4 sub-tests.  These include: how many pushups you can do in 1 min., how many sit ups you can do in 1 min., the Illinois Agility Run, and the Beep Test that will be used to evaluate your VO2 max level.  Ideally, you would want to score the same amount on each sub-test, however, a person can score better in some categories than in others as long as the final cumulative total is 12 or 21 points or more.

The Illinois Agility Run

  • Purpose:  to test running agility
  • Procedure:  The length of the course is 10 meters and the width (distance between the start and finish points) is 5 meters. Four cones are used to mark the start, finish, and the two turning points. Another four cones are placed down the center at an equal distance apart. Each cone in the center is spaced 3.3 meters apart. Subjects lay on their stomachs (heads towards the start line) and hands by their shoulders. On the 'Go' command, the stopwatch is started, and the athlete gets up as quickly as possible and runs around the course in the direction indicated to the finish line without knocking the cones over.  Time stops upon crossing the finish line.

The Beep Test

  • Purpose:  The Beep test is a 20m multistage fitness test (MSFT) and is a commonly used maximal running aerobic fitness test.
  • Procedure: This test involves continuous running between two lines 20m apart in time to recorded beeps. For this reason the test is also often called the ‘bleep’ test. The participants stand behind one of the lines facing the second line, and begin running when instructed by the recording. The speed at the start is quite slow. The subject continues running between the two lines, turning when signaled by the recorded beeps. After about one minute, a sound indicates an increase in speed, and the beeps will be closer together. This continues each minute (level). If the line is reached before the beep sounds, the subject must wait until the beep sounds before continuing. If the line is not reached before the beep sounds, the subject is given a warning and must continue to run to the line, then turn and try to catch up with the pace within two more ‘beeps’. The test is stopped if the subject fails to reach the line for two consecutive attempts and warnings.
