Job Description:

Job Objectives:

This is a professional staff position that provides direct services to participants in the WIC program. The dietitians provide nutrition education, community referrals, breastfeeding education and support. They are responsible for determining the client’s program eligibility based on nutritional/medical risk and assignment of the appropriate supplemental food package for qualifying women, infants and children. The registered dietitians in WIC provide the follow-up education for clients found with risks which are assigned a high priority per program protocols.


Essential Job Functions:


  • Assigns nutrition risk for client eligibility.
  • Determines frequency and type of client follow-up appointments.
  • Uses goal setting and stage of change principles to assess client’s state of behavioral change.
  • Provides nutrition counseling for clients and families and follow-up counseling to clients determined to be high risk.
  • Accurately collects client’s medical data.

Provides Education

  • Uses motivational counseling methods.
  • Makes appropriate community and medical referrals.
  • Accurately reads immunization records.
  • Provides community outreach.
  • Provides breastfeeding education, promotion and support.
  • Prescribes appropriate WIC food package.

Manage Record Keeping

  • Authorizes and coordinates special formula issuance.
  • Schedules future WIC appointments appropriate for program requirements.
  • Completes documentation in the program software timely and thoroughly.
  • Meets productivity standards.
  • Reports success stories.

Job Standards:

Minimum Qualifications

Educational Requirements:  Bachelor’s Degree in Food, Nutrition or related Science and completes a dietetic route accredited by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

License, certifications, etc…If not already licensed in the State of KS, the new hire obtains a temporary license from KDADS - Kansas Credentialing for Dietitians, Topeka KS within 60 days of hire.
 Registered by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Or successfully passes the registration examination within twelve months of employment if not yet registered by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
If not already registered obtains permanent license from the State of Kansas after passing the registration exam.

Preferred Qualifications

Years of Experience:  Knowledge of women health and pediatrics preferred.

License, certifications, etc…Certified as a breastfeeding educator preferred.


Physical Requirements of Position:

Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objectives.  If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated light work.

The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform and activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operating of machines ; using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes.

Work Environment:

Usual working days/hours:  Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with one night per week until 6:30 p.m. by staff rotation

Location of work:  1900 E 9th

The employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.  All employees may be required to wear respirators in emergency situations and for routine operations as requested.  Employees will be enrolled in the respiratory protection program, which may include an annual fit testing and medical evaluation.  This position is considered a level 3 “driving” position.  Position requires occasional (less than weekly) driving to attend meetings or training sessions; or, the position requires occasional (less than weekly) driving to appear for work at non-routine worksites.   Must possess valid Kansas driver’s license appropriate to the vehicle operated.  Must maintain in-force personal vehicle insurance if operating a POV while conducting authorized county business.
