Job Description:



Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Training Coordinator, the School Resource Officer performs general law enforcement duties in the protection of life and property for the School District for which the Butler County Sheriff’s Office is contracted. Work involves patrolling county areas, enforcing all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances, securing compliance with traffic violations and making investigations at the scene of a crime or traffic accident.  Work in this position involves an element of personal danger.  The employee in this position is expected to have a high level of communication skills as well as law enforcement knowledge.  This employee will be expected to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent judgment in the performance of his/her duties.


Examples of Work (Essential Functions):

  • Answers a variety of calls and complaints involving automobile accidents, robberies, domestic disturbances and other misdemeanors and felonies;
  • Arrests individuals who violate laws and ordinances;
  • Completes reports and records;
  • Conducts investigations and gathers evidence;
  • Contacts witnesses and makes arrests;
  • Enforces all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances;
  • Patrols county and related areas to preserve law and order;
  • Performs duties of warrant, detention, transport, and court deputies; as needed;
  • Receives and answers complaints and requests from the general public;
  • Testifies in court or related activities;
  • Provides information as requested for teachers in-service or classroom presentations;
  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary or as required.

Certificate, License: Valid driver's license. Certification through the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center or equivalent.


Required Education and/or Experience: Three to six months related experience, High School Diploma or G.E.D. and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after six months in the position. 40 hours of continuing education annually.


Preferred Education and/or Experience:  Six months to twelve months related experience, High School Diploma or G.E.D. and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Abilities, Knowledge, Skills:

  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's;
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively recognizing actual or potential dangers, and determine proper course of action;
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry;
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume;
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions;
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, Local, State and Federal officers, groups, and with citizens from varied racial, ethnic or economic backgrounds;
  • Ability to have good communication abilities;
  • Ability to operate emergency vehicles, radios, firearms, DUI enforcement and fingerprinting equipment and other law enforcement equipment;
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance;
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations;
  • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties;
  • Ability to remember details; problem solve effectively and make sound decisions;
  • Ability to respond quickly, maintain composure, self-restraint and emotional control in stressful, difficult, dangerous, or criminal situations;
  • Ability to utilize tact, discretion, courtesy and respect for individual rights;
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals;
  • Knowledge of court rules and procedures and ability to render credible testimony in a court of law;
  • Knowledge of law enforcement administration and organization, County and Departmental Policies and Procedures, all appropriate criminal laws, including county resolutions and appropriate administrative laws relative to public employment including local ordinances, crime prevention activities, use and care of county equipment, and contemporary law enforcement, technologies, methods, and practices recognized in the law enforcement community;
  • Knowledge of law enforcement techniques and federal, state, and local laws and ordinances;
  • Knowledge of patrol procedures, criminal investigation techniques, criminal identification, records maintenance and radio procedures;
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of modern police work and the laws governing arrest, custody of prisoners, search and seizure and rules of evidence;
  • Skill in interpersonal, oral and written communication;
  • Skill in the use and care of various firearms and law enforcement equipment, including skill in safe and effective use of self-defense weapons and methods.


Problem Solving: Frequent problem solving exists in this position.  Problems include dealing with the public, victim trauma and with the criminal element.


Decision Making: Decision making exists in this position.  Decisions include determining whether to arrest an individual and appropriate action to be taken in family disputes.


Accountability: Employee is not responsible for budgetary control of the department and does not participate in the annual department budget process.


Supervision: Supervision is provided in the field and job related decisions are reviewed by the Training Coordinator. Employee does not have supervisory responsibilities over subordinate personnel.


Personal Relationships: Frequent contact with other county departments and continual contact with the general public. Be able to clearly communicate to other officers and the public. Officers must also testify in a court of law.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is exposed less than one third of the time to conditions such moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals and outside weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.  This position is exposed to very stressful situations where things may seem chaotic.  This position may be exposed to blood borne pathogens or bodily fluids, dangerous situations.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk, use hands to finger, grasp, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. Lifting, moving, pushing or pulling up to 25 pounds does generally occur, in emergencies may be necessary to lift, move, push, or pull up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
