Job Description:

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Parks Supervisor, The Park Laborer-Downtown Landscaping position involves the performance of varied tasks in grounds keeping and lawn and garden type maintenance.  Duties include manual labor tasks and the operation of various hand and power tools in the maintenance and care of trees and plantings in the Wellington downtown area.  Tasks include maintaining and caring for the planters in the downtown area and the planting and caring for various trees, plants, shrubs and flowers.  The employee in this position fertilizes areas when necessary and sprays for the control of weeds and insects.  This is a seasonal position with flexible work hours between March and October.

Essential Functions

  • Maintains and cares for the planters located in the City of Wellington downtown area;
  • Plants, waters, fertilizes, and trims grasses, plants/flowers, hedges, trees and shrubs;
  • Performs spraying for the control and eradication of weeds and insects;
  • Removes weeds from planters and tree wells;
  • Removes trash from planters and tree wells;
  • Operates various hand and power tools used in the maintenance and care of trees, plants, and other horticulture items.

Marginal Functions

  • Performs other duties/tasks as deemed necessary or assigned;
  • Assists other departments as needed.

Position Requirements

Experience:   Two years of similar or related experience in grounds keeping and/or lawn and garden care is preferred. 

Education/Licenses:  A high school diploma or G.E.D. is preferred.  Valid Kansas Driver’s License required.

Technical Skills:  Ability to proficiently and safely operate a variety of power and hand tools necessary for grounds keeping and horticulture care.  General working knowledge of the different types of trees, plants, flowers and shrubs and the proper maintenance and care techniques of such.  Ability to tactfully deal with other persons and to communicate, clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.

Problem Solving: Moderate problem solving exists in relation to the daily performance of functions and/or assigned tasks.  Typical problems involve determining the best and proper care and actions for maintaining tree and plants in good health.

Decision-Making:  Limited to moderate decision making responsibilities.  Decisions relate to the planning, scheduling and prioritizing of tasks to most efficiently utilize time, equipment and materials to accomplish assigned duties.                                                   

Supervision:   Limited direct supervision provided relating to daily job functions.  Employee is expected to complete tasks at outlined in the City of Wellington Downtown Planter Beautification Schedule.  Work performance reviewed by Parks Supervisor and Public Works Director.  Employee does not have supervisory responsibilities over personnel.

Financial Accountability: Employee is responsible for collecting and reporting any property or items of value found during the performance of duties. 

Personal Relations:  Frequent contact with the general public while performing duties in the downtown area.  Frequent to occasional contact with other city employees and supervisory personnel.

Working Conditions:  Some hazardous working conditions may exist in this position relating to the operation of hand and power cutting and trimming tools.  Exposure to noise while operating will occur.  Exposure to various chemicals used for the care and maintenance of plants and trees.  Adverse weather conditions when performing outside grounds care is a factor.  General work hours may vary. 

Physical Requirements:  To perform the duties of this job, the employee must have fine and gross manual dexterity.  Ability to lift up to one hundred (100) pounds occasionally and up to fifty (50) pounds frequently.  Ability to walk, bend, stoop, kneel and climb ladders and/or stairs.
