The City of Garnett is currently accepting applications for the position of Public Works Laborer. This position is responsible for the construction and maintenance of the City’s streets, and gas, stormwater, wastewater, and water distribution systems. The ideal candidate will have experience in operating heavy equipment, a working knowledge of plumbing and construction techniques, a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), and either a High School Diploma or GED. We will train the right candidate however. The hired candidate is required to have obtained their CDL or be Operator Qualified in the gas distribution system within six months of hire. * Installs and repairs water and gas mains;
* Installs metering on water and gas lines;
* Operates heavy equipment such as backhoe and trencher;
* Prepares reports for gas regulation requirements;
* Maintains gas regulations regulators, pressure relief systems and corrosion control;
* Butt fusion and socket fusion of P.E. plastic gas pipe;
* Prepares survey work and maps;
* Prepares over the line surveys;
* Other related duties as deemed necessary or as required.
Experience: One to three years of repair and installation of gas and water line experience. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after six months in the position.
Education: High school diploma or GED required. Must be certified in socket and butt fusion of P.E. pipe.
Skills: Thorough knowledge and understanding of all federal, state and local laws and regulations governing the gas and water lines, their installation and maintenance. Thorough knowledge of all safety requirements. Mathematical aptitude. The ability to operate a trencher, backhoe, odorimeter, CGI gas tester, CG leak tracer, pipe locator, flame ionization gas leak detector and other related equipment.
Problem Solving: Problem solving is a factor in this position. Problems include repairing gas and water lines and detecting leaks.
Decision-Making: Decision making is a factor in this position. Decisions include determining the proper material to use for conditions.
Accountability: Employee is not responsible for budgetary control of any area within the department and does not participate in the annual departmental budgetary process.
Supervision: Limited supervision is required and job related decisions are reviewed by the water/gas superintendent. Employee may have supervisory responsibility over subordinate personnel.
Personal Relations: Frequent contact with other city departments and the general public.
Residency: The employee working in this position is required to reside within Anderson County.
Working Conditions: Extreme weather conditions, working with natural gas and manual labor are hazardous conditions in this position.
