Job Title: Utility Superintendent
The City of Paola, Kansas (pop. 5,600) is seeking applicants for a full-time Utilities Superintendent. Under the supervision of the Public Works Director, this position directs the operation of staff of the water system and wastewater treatment and collection facilities; oversees the maintenance and repair of city pool;
- Minimum of five years progressively responsible experience in water systems general construction, maintenance and repair work
- Able to operate backhoes, loaders, skid steers
- Able to read, understand, and maintain maps and records of water and sewer system
- High school graduate or GED
- Possession of a valid Class B CDL driver's license or ability to attain within six months
- Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screen, pre-employment physical, criminal background check and have a good driving record
- Must have small systems water operator and wastewater certifications, and the ability to obtain higher certifications as needed
Special Requirements: Knowledge of sewer lift stations is preferred. Please note this is a working supervisory position. Successful candidate must live or be willing to relocate to within a 30-minute response time of the Paola city limits. A motor vehicle (MVR) check will be made to determine acceptance of past driving record.
Working Conditions: This position requires the willingness and ability to work around raw sewage, chemicals and dusty environments, exposure to noise of plant machinery and other equipment; mechanical and electrical hazards of operating equipment; fumes and odors of sewage, chemicals, and gases; toxic substances such as chemicals, cleaners, solvents, and gases; all types of weather and temperature conditions. May be required to work in confined spaces, hazardous traffic conditions, or high/dangerous places. Work and/or walk for long periods of time on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain. Subject to 24-hour emergency callbacks and standby and requires working varying hours, overtime, weekends, and holidays. Work environment is informal, team-oriented, having both routine and variable tasks with variable pace and pressure. Work is performed in both indoors in plant area and outdoors in field and collateral facilities.
Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 75 pounds occasionally; ability to stand, walk, climb, sit, bend, twist, crawl, pull, push, grasp, and perform similar body movements. Hand/eye/foot coordination adequate for operation of equipment, using tools, and making repairs. Ability to talk and hear in person, by two-way radio and telephone, and to detect malfunctions in equipment. Ability to see for operation and maintenance of equipment and facilities, reading charts, and logging operational and treatment information.
