Position Summary: The City of Abilene Kansas seeks qualified candidates for a Park Maintenance position. Under the supervision of the Park Maintenance Supervisor, the Park Maintenance I is a non-exempt position under FLSA. This employee maintains the city's park and recreation facilities, operates departmental equipment, and performs grounds keeping duties. This employee should possess strong mechanical aptitude and communication skills.

Reports To Park Maintenance Supervisor
FLSA Status Non-Exempt (eligible for overtime pay)

Essential Job Functions:
Maintains and services department equipment;
Operates mowers, hedgers, weed eaters, and other lawn care equipment;
Performs tree trimming duties, and operates chainsaws;
Hauls trash, and cleans restrooms;
Repairs and installs playground equipment;
Performs repairs to the sprinkler system, and performs other minor plumbing repairs;
Performs janitorial duties and minor repairs to all recreation facilities such as, senior center, basketball/softball complexes, swimming pool and parks;
Prepares and maintains all athletic fields;
Provides snow and ice removal during inclement weather;
Performs light carpentry duties;
Assists in the gardening and grounds keeping duties;Assists in the landscaping, planting, placement of plants, flowers and shrubs throughout the city;
Assists with set up for special events
Performs painting duties as needed throughout city owned facilities
Ancillary Job Functions:
Assists other departments as the need arises;
Assists with various special events throughout the year;
Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.
Works with community service volunteers
Assist public with landscaping advice
Education and Experience:
A high school diploma or GED, and a valid Kansas drivers license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: (Not all inclusive)
The ability and willingness to learn about equipment maintenance, carpentry, mechanics, and lawn care techniques is required. This employee must be able to operate hand tools, power tools, chainsaws, mowers and other departmental equipment. The ability to read and interpret written instructions, and strong oral and written communication skills are required.
Work Environment: Adverse working conditions exist within this position. Exposure to hazardous chemicals and all types of weather conditions is possible.

Manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy loads, bending, stooping, and the ability to operate departmental equipment is required to perform the daily duties of this position.
