The City of Park City is seeking a positive professional for Assistant Director of Public Works; a working leadership role responsible for directing, supervising, and coordinating the activities and operations of the Park and Street systems of the City of Park City and may assist with the supervision and coordination of activities in sewer, water and maintenance operations.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of leadership experience in Public Works or a related service environment to include working knowledge in the maintenance  of parks, buildings, streets, water distribution systems, sanitary sewer and storm sewer systems.

Under the supervision of the Public Work Director, the Assistant Public Works Director is a non- exempt position under FLSA.  This employee is responsible for directing, supervising, and coordinating the activities of subordinate personnel in the operations and maintenance of Streets and Parks and may assist with the supervision and coordination of activities in sewer, water, and maintenance operations.  The Assistant Public Works Director should possess a strong mechanical aptitude, and excellent public relations, supervisory, organizational, and communication skills. In the absence of the Public Works Director, this position may assume all duties of the Public Works Director.




  • Plans, organizes, and implements department activities, developing a work plan to carry out program objectives for the Public Works Department;
  • Supervises subordinate personnel, including effectively recommending the hire, training, evaluation, promotion, transfer or termination of employees and to effectively recommend the adjustment of grievances from employees under supervision;
  • Responsible for care and use of equipment utilized by Public Works Department;
  • Solicits and receives competitive bids subject to the Public Works Director oversight;
  • Assigns jobs other than normal daily duties;
  • Answers questions concerning public works issues;
  • Enforces department policies and procedures;
  • Answers citizen complaints as they relate to public work issues;
  • Assists in the preparation of  department budgets;
  • Attends City Council meetings for reports in absence of Public Works Director;
  • Provides assistance to other departments as required;
  • Works with supervisors to coordinate work of volunteer agencies and community service workers;
  • Follows department policies and procedures;
  • Follows safety procedures and practices;
  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.


  • Performs public works inspections as required;
  • Supervises and assists Public Works Department in emergencies as assigned by the Public Works Director.





Experience:  Five years of progressively responsible leadership experience in a Public Works or related service environment is required.  Previous supervisory experience is required.  Knowledge of Public Works and Park activities including general maintenance of sanitary sewers, storm sewers, streets, water distribution systems, parks, and buildings.


Education:  Post-secondary level education in a related field is preferred.  A high school diploma or GED is required or must be obtained within six months of employment.


Technical Skills:  A thorough knowledge of safety procedures, construction techniques, electronics, equipment maintenance, budget preparation, and a working knowledge of computers and mathematics are required.  This employee must be able to operate backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, snowplows, tractors, mowers, and other department equipment.  The ability to understand and anticipate problems, to assist with the development and enforcement of department safety policies and procedures, to prepare reports and budgets, and to interpret written instructions, maps, schematics, blueprints, reports, and manuals is required.  This employee should possess a strong mechanical and technical aptitude, and excellent public relations skills.  The employee will also utilize supervisory, organizational, oral and written communication skills.


Problem Solving:  Independent problem solving is a major factor in this position.  This employee must be prepared to encounter problems with equipment malfunctions, personnel issues, citizen complaints, and budget preparation.  Excellent public relations skills will be required for dealing with citizen issues.


Decision Making:  Independent decision making is a major factor in this position.  This employee makes decisions about resolving citizen complaints and personnel issues, prioritizing department activities and goals, and performing daily duties in the safest and most efficient manner.


Supervision:  This position is subject to daily supervision from the Public Works Director and exercises daily supervision over subordinate personnel.


Financial Accountability:  This employee is responsible for department resources and equipment, has authority to purchase necessary department supplies in accordance with the city purchasing policy, participates in the annual budget process, and is responsible for operating within that budget.


Personal Relations:  Daily contact with the general public, subordinate personnel, co-workers, and supervisory personnel is expected.  Occasional contact with governing body members is expected.


Physical Requirements:  Manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects, bending, kneeling, climbing, walking and the ability operate department equipment is required daily in this position.


Working Conditions:  Adverse working conditions exist with this position.  Exposure to blood borne pathogens, hazardous chemicals, heavy machinery, excessive noise, heights, confined areas, and adverse weather is expected.
