POSITION SUMMARY                                                                                                                                 

Under the supervision of the Assistant Fire Chief, the Fire Captain is a non-exempt position under FLSA. This employee is responsible for supervising the safe operation and transportation of men and equipment to emergencies and other non-emergency locations. This employee is responsible for protecting the lives and property of the citizens of McPherson by supervising the activities of the fire crews during fire suppression, technical rescues, hazardous materials responses, and while providing emergency medical care. This employee should be in excellent physical condition, and possess the ability to remain posed and make critical decisions under extremely difficult and hazardous circumstances. The Fire Captain should possess a strong mechanical aptitude, and excellent supervisory, public relations, and communication skills, as well as a thorough knowledge of ICS.


  • Supervises the safe transportation of men and equipment to emergency and non-emergency locations;
  • Directs the initial placement of apparatus and fire fighting forces at fires and other emergencies in a safe and efficient manner;
  • Supervises fire crews during fire fighting operations and high angle, confined space, and vehicle extrication rescues;
  • Identifies and initiates initial control and evacuation measures at hazardous materials releases;


  • Directs emergency medical care for the sick and injured;
  • Directs public education activities assigned to the company;

  • Supervises the cleaning and maintenance of the Fire Station building, and supervises the use of supplies;
  • Assumes responsibility for training subordinate personnel through daily training sessions;
  • Completes reports detailing company activities at emergencies and non-emergencies;
  • Maintains an accurate knowledge of both Fire Fighter and Fire Driver duties and functions and is responsible for the readiness of his crew;
  • Performs arson investigations;
  • Initiates the ICS when necessary;
  • Must be able to provide credible testimony in any court proceedings;
  • Oversee the completion of all run reports;
  • Enforces department policies and procedures;
  • Enforces safety procedures and practices.


  • Conducts fire inspections for businesses in the community;
  • Assists with public fire education programs;
  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary.



Experience: Six years fire fighting experience is required with at least two years of experience as a Lieutenant.  Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within one year of employment.

Education: A high school diploma or GED is required, and a technical degree or some college credit in Fire Science is preferred. This employee must possess certifications as an Emergency Medical Technician, Fire Fighter I, II, Hazardous Materials Operations, and Instructor I. A valid Kansas Driver’s License (KDL) and have and maintain a good driving record is required.  ICS 100,200,300,400,700,800.

Technical Skills: A thorough knowledge of fire suppression techniques, rescue activities, medical treatment, safe handling of hazardous materials releases, and disaster management. This employee should have a thorough knowledge of rescue activities and equipment including high angle, confined spaces, and vehicle extrications. A thorough knowledge of department policies concerning safety issues, including those than deal with blood borne pathogens and accident reporting is required. The Fire Captain must have the ability to understand and anticipate problems, to read and interpret written instructions, reports, manuals, and instruction materials. This employee should possess a strong mechanical aptitude, and excellent supervisory, public relation, oral and written communication skills. The Fire Captain should have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the Incident Command System is able to implement it at minor incidents and work within it at major incidents. 

Problem Solving: Independent problem solving is involved in this position. This employee encounters problems with personnel and station equipment. This employee encounters serious problems with life safety issues including personnel, equipment malfunctions, fire suppression, emergency medical services, and hazardous materials responses. Serious problems are reported to the Assistant Fire Chief.

Decision Making: Independent decision making is involved in this position. This employee makes routine decisions regarding personnel and station issues, and makes critical decisions about life safety, including personnel, fire fighting, rescue, providing medical assistance, and performing daily duties in the safest and most efficient manner.

Supervision: This employee works with occasional supervision from the Assistant Fire Chief. This employee exercises frequent supervision over subordinate personnel.

Financial Accountability: This employee is responsible for the safe operation of department equipment. This employee does not participate in the annual budget process.  The Captain is responsible for overseeing all of the crews’ purchases and reporting those purchases to administration. 

Personal Relations: This employee has daily contact with the general public and at times deals with the public in extremely tense and stressful situations. This employee interacts with co-workers in a non-traditional workplace, and daily interaction with supervisors is expected.

Working Conditions: Adverse working conditions exist within this position. Exposure to extremes of heat and cold is expected. This employee is also exposed to structural collapses, contact with hazardous materials, explosives, asbestos, and radiation, work from heights and in confined

spaces, and work around heavy machinery. This position contains a significant risk to personal safety. Exposure to blood borne pathogens while responding to and providing emergency medical treatment is expected.

Physical Requirements: The Fire Captain must be in excellent physical condition. The type and amount of personal protective clothing required to perform the duties of the Fire Captain along with the working conditions listed above creates a significant increase in physical stress to the well being of the employee. Manual labor including heavy lifting, pulling, and carrying heavy objects and equipment is expected. Climbing is a significant aspect of the job. Decisions made during critical moments at emergencies increases mental stress.

Residence requirements: Live within five road miles of the McPherson Fire Department and maintain an active telephone.
