Over the past few years disaster has struck close to home, showing us just how important our emergency response teams are. Entry-level firefighters will gain an understanding of public safety including: learning and applying firefighting and emergency response techniques, protecting lives and property by preventing and extinguishing fires, inspecting property for fire and safety hazards, and promoting public awareness and education. The Kansas Fire Service Partnership (KFSP) is accepting applications for current and future entry-level Firefighter opportunities in member departments. The KFSP is an association of fire departments in Kansas joining together to enhance professionalism in the fire service, provide greater opportunity for individuals wishing to enter the fire service as a career, and make responsible use of resources entrusted to public safety agencies by the taxpayers of Kansas. The Fire Science Program of Hutchinson Community College coordinates and administers the application and examination process for KFSP member departments. The CPAT Coordinator of the HCC Fire Science program will schedule all events and notify candidates of dates and times by mail after receiving payment. Payment options are listed below under Step 2. On the day of testing, applicants may chose which member departments they wish to be eligible for employment. Completing the application and examination process successfully will enter your name into a database. Once in this database the departments you have selected may pull your name based on their requirements and begin the hiring process with you. For this reason please ensure that all contact information is current and correct. Some member departments require both a passing CPAT test and a passing score (70%) on the video-based written exam and some departments have other requirements. The current test makers recommended passing scores are Human Relations 75%, Reading 70%, Mechanical 65% and Overall 70%. Please contact the individual departments for their requirements. Additionally, some departments will require EMT Certification before they will consider an applicant eligible. STEP 1: Create an account with Kansas HRePartners and submit and e*application for the FIREFIGHTER, Entry Level position with the Kansas Fire Service Partnership. Once your e*application has been received, an e-mail notification with information will be sent to you.
STEP 2: Submit examination fee(s). - The Video-based Written Examination is $40.00. The Candidate Physical Ability Test is $85.00. Applicants taking both Written and CPAT tests will be scheduled on the same day. Both tests must be successfully completed to be placed into the database. NOTE: The candidates test date and time will be assigned upon payment of fees. The established days and times for testing will be filled on a first come first served basis as payment arrives. Upon payment of fees, an examination information guide and the assigned date/time will be sent in the mail. No other notification will be provided.
STEP 3: Written Examination- A qualifying score of at least 70% correct must be achieved to remain eligible. Candidates will be notified by email (preferred) or U.S. mail of examination results.
STEP 4: CPAT- Candidate Physical Ability Test- is a pass/fail process. Candidates must complete the entire CPAT course, in the prescribed manner, within established time limits. Applicants will be notified of pass/fail at conclusion of exam. Candidates who successfully complete both tests will be entered on an eligibility roster. Candidates on this roster will be referred to hiring member departments based upon required specifications of the department and candidate-specified desires.
STEP 5: CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) Orientation. It is Mandatory that all candidates attend two Orientations and two Practice test sessions prior to the actual test date. This allows all candidates full and equal opportunity to receive hands-on familiarity with the equipment and test procedures. The dates of these events will be mailed to you with your testing letter. It is permissible to excuse candidates from the class requirements upon receipt of a written and signed waiver stating that the candidate knowingly and voluntarily waives the mandatory orientation and practice sessions. There is no fee for CPAT orientation or the practice dates.
