The City of Edgerton is located in the southwest corner of Johnson County, Kansas approximately twenty minutes from Olathe, Kansas and the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. Edgerton has an estimated population of 1,744 people, which creates a small-town atmosphere that many residents enjoy. Edgerton is located adjacent to the Johnson County Park and Recreation District’s Big Bull Creek Park, which will be master planned in the near future. Also near the city is the Mildale Farm, another Johnson County Park and Recreation District facility that attracts many people throughout the County for weddings and other special events.

Broad policy and directives are approved by a Governing Body comprised of a Mayor and five City Councilors, all of which are elected at-large. The Governing Body has hired a City Administrator to manage the day-to-day operations of the City and implement the policies and directives of the Governing Body. The City currently has nine full-time employees providing a diverse array of public services to the community. Such services include, the operation of water and sewer utilities, municipal court, building inspections, parks and recreation, code enforcement, planning and zoning, and street maintenance. Johnson County Sheriff’s Department provides law enforcement services and Johnson County Rural Fire District #1 provides fire protection.

Who receives benefits?

All regular full-time employees are eligible to receive the full package of city benefits.  The City participates in a Section 125 Cafeteria Plan that allows employees’ cost of health insurance premiums to be paid from salary before taxes.  This results in increased spendable income by decreasing taxes.

Health Insurance

All full-time employees shall be eligible for the city’s group health care insurance program which commences on the first of the month following initial date of employment.  The City’s paid participation in the group health care insurance plan shall be the amount necessary to pay the cost of the individual employee’s premium.  The City will pay ½ of the employee’s family premium up to a maximum of $150.00 per month.

Dental Insurance 

Edgerton provides a dental insurance plan for all full-time employees.  Coverage is effective on the first of the month, following the initial date of employment.  The City will pay for the single dental plan coverage.  If an employee chooses to enroll in the family plan, the employee pays the cost of family coverage.

Life Insurance

Eligible employees receive a life insurance policy in the amount of $10,000 which is fully paid by the City.  Coverage is effective on the first of the month, following employment.

Voluntary Insurance Policies

Employees may also participate in other voluntary insurance programs, which are paid by the employee through payroll deduction.

Kansas Public Employee Retirement System

This is a mandatory retirement plan that becomes effective after one year of continuous service for employees working at least 1,000 regularly scheduled hours per year. (Participation requirements change 7-01-08).  Under KPERS, members contribute four percent (4%) of their compensation.  The City’s contribution rate may fluctuate, depending on the funding needs of the Retirement system.   The City’s contribution includes a death and disability benefit for the employee.   KPERS contributions are excluded from gross income for federal income tax purposes.

Vacation Leave

Eligible employees accrue between 10-20 days per year depending on length of service.  Employees must have completed 6-months of service prior to using such leave.

Sick Leave

Eligible full-time employees accrue six (6) hours of sick leave for each full month of service.  (Nine (9) days annually.  No employee may accrue more than 1020 hours of sick leave.  Sick leave may be used for personal illness or injury and necessary medical appointments.

Personal Leave

Permanent full-time employees shall be entitled to three eight (8) hour days of personal leave each calendar year beginning on each January 1 with no annual carry over of unused personal leave allowed.  Newly hired employees are not eligible for personal leave until the calendar year next following the year in which the employee was hired. 


Eligible employees receive the following 10 paid holidays:  New Year’s Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, Friday Following Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.

Funeral Leave

In case of the death of a member of an employee’s immediate family, full-time employees shall be granted funeral leave not to exceed three (3) working days.

Condition of Employment

The City is an “at-will” employer.  Terms, conditions, and benefits of employment are subject to change.  Selected candidates must satisfy other employment prerequisites, in addition to have the required qualifications and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.  If the position requires driving, a driver’s license check will be scheduled.  All candidates selected for employment are required to undergo a post-offer physical assessment, background check, drug screening.
