General Information

Phillipsburg, incorporated in 1872, is the county seat of Phillips County.  The 2010 U.S. Census showed a population of 2,581.  Phillipsburg is located in northwest Kansas at the intersection of U.S. Highway 183 and U.S. Highway 36. 

Phillipsburg has a “mayor/council” form of municipal government.  The mayor is elected at large and two council members are elected from each of the three wards.  The City has 19 year-round full time employees. 

Recreation is a vital part of our community.  Recreation facilities include parks, an aquatic center with both indoor therapy/exercise and outdoor pools, an active arts council, and museums.  Kirwin National Wildlife Refuge is one of over 500 refuges administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and  is located 15 miles from Phillipsburg.  Kirwin NWR, consisting of 10,778 acres, supports diverse wildlife habitat including grasslands, wooded riparian areas, open water, wetlands, and croplands. Recreational activities such as fishing, hunting, wildlife observation, photography, biking, and hiking can be enjoyed at Kirwin. Harlan County Reservoir is located north of Phillipsburg approximately 25 miles in southern Nebraska.  A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' project covering 31,000 acres, with 13,250 acres of water surface, Harlan County Reservoir is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ project and is Nebraska's second largest lake with 13,250 acres of water surface.  It offers year round recreational activities, including hunting, fishing, water sports and camping.

Phillipsburg’s business community is very active.  Industries include TAMKO Building Products, Inc., Prairie Horizon Agri-Energy, LLC, Mineral-Right, Inc.  With approximately 30 retail businesses and 13 eating establishments, Phillipsburg has a lot to offer.

Phillipsburg Unified School District #325 operates an elementary school, middle school, and high school in Phillipsburg with an approximate full time equivalent enrollment of 600 students each current school year. .
